The Main Street Youth Theatre is heading to high school this summer with “Disney’s High School Musical.” Based on the popular Disney movie, this high-energy production features Troy, Gabriella and the students of East High dealing with issues of first love, friends and family while balancing their classes and extracurricular activities.  If you aren’t familiar with the main storyline, basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical. Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

The show features a cast of 25 with six local high schools being represented and stars Daniel Harrington as Troy Bolton, Harper Krimm as Gabrielle Montez, Elliott Lentz as Sharpay Evans, Luke Herman as Ryan Evans and so many more. “This show embodies the fun, contemporary energy featured in the movie, and is something that the whole family can enjoy,” MSYT Board President Cinda Seamon notes.

The show’s production team includes Hilton Head Christian Academy’s Theater Director Michelle McElroy (Director), Cynthia Cullen (Music Director), Jamal Edwards (Choreographer) and Logan Naddy (Stage Manager).  “We couldn’t be more excited to have this production team together again,” Seamon adds. “Their professionalism and collective creative vision ensure this will be nothing short of spectacular!” Director Michelle McElroy is clearly excited as well, ““We’re All in This Together” is one of the well-known songs from the show, but it really rings true for us!  It’s great seeing the theater kids from different schools come together to create something special in the summer. I’m honored to once again be a part of it!”

There will be 10 performances total; June 19th thru June 30th; evening performances at 7pm and 2pm matinees on Saturday & Sunday (6/23 & 6/30).

Tickets are only $19 for adults and $12 for students and are available online via or by calling the box office at 843-689-6246.

It’s a big year for The Main Street Youth Theatre. It actually began as a small group of interested islander’s then became The Hilton Head Community and Youth Theater in the early ’90s until 2006 when the name was officially changed to The Main Street Youth Theatre. Productions were originally staged at the community playhouse located in Dunnagan’s Alley with rehearsals at Hilton Head Prep. It was founded with a goal to create a family-centered community-based theater where the performers are local children, parents and community
adults. The mission included an objective to educate young local performers in all aspects of the theater, and to encourage family involvement in this activity. By exposing youth to a true theatrical experience, the Main Street Youth Theatre would provide an avenue to increase their self-esteem as well as enlighten and educate them through the power of live performance. 20 years later with nearly 70 production credits, that goal and mission remains intact.

With 2017 bringing this milestone anniversary, its board members have been charged with creating a celebration that will include past alumni and current cast members. “The Main Street Youth Theatre has had such a positive impact on so many young lives”, Board Chairperson Cindra Seamon notes. “So many alumni remain involved in some aspect of theater whether community-based or otherwise and we have numerous alumni that have gone on to embrace the arts as a career. Either way, the theater has left such a positive mark and we have so much to celebrate.” The widespread impact has been with adults as well. From parents of the young thespians to volunteers as well as board members, countless hours and endless encouragement have been invested. So many adults have played key roles in the success of the organization; one in particular whose legacy continues and is given special honor this year is Judy Gallagher. Judy’s love of theater and in particular the Main Street Youth Theatre was evident in the numerous productions she performed in as well as her dedication to the organization off the stage. She had a passion and a joy seeing our area youth pouring their hearts into every production and wanted to see that continue long into the future. Her contribution has been significant and no 20th anniversary celebration would be complete without a special thank you to Judy.

So what does the future hold for Main Street Youth Theatre? The immediate future includes the spectacular 20th anniversary show entitled “This Is Our Story; Celebrating 20 Years” and auditions are scheduled for October 18th & 19th from 6pm-8pm at the Seahawk Cultural Center. This musical revue will pay homage to some of the favorite past shows and include special appearances from MSYT alumni. The show will run from November 30th thru December 3rd (only five shows) and all are encouraged to “save the date”. Tickets can be purchased now by going to

The 2018 season promises to bring an even more exciting line-up for our youth. The current board is dedicated to maintaining the goals and mission of the theater and looks forward to providing stellar theatrical experiences to many generations to come. Congratulations Main Street Youth Theatre… 20 beautiful years. Judy would be proud.
